Is Acne Preventable?

A pimple is a tiny pustule. Pimples are tiny skin inflammations of the skin – they build up when sebaceous /oil glands become blocked and get contaminated, causing inflamed, red pus filled lesions. The sebaceous glands are small sized skin glands which exist inside the skin pores which ooze sebum – a waxy cum oily matter that greases the skin and hair in humans. These glands are present all over our body except the soles and palm areas. The external layers of our skin are shed constantly.
However, at times, dead skin cells are not discarded and get trapped in the clammy sebum, causing an obstruction of the pores. This blockage caused due to sebum and dead skin cells accumulation promotes the development of unwanted bacteria and thus gives rise to acne. Acne is most common in puberty and aggravated in hot and humid climates.

Some measures to be taken to prevent or reduce acne:

  • Wash your face: at least twice a day with a mild antiseptic soap or facewash to wash off excess oil/sebum and to allow the skin pores to breathe. It will also discourage the clogging of the skin pores and discourage pimples.
  • Balanced diet: Avoid excessive intake of oily, high glycemic index foods as they trigger acne. However, foods rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E prevent acne outbreak.
  • Drink plenty of water: to keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins from the body.
